Detective Conan: The Stranger in 10 years

This is one of my favorite episodes in the Conan anime series. Conan is a high school detective, who is forced to eat a special kind of medicine which turns him into a 12 year old. He still contains his knowledge, but he is limited by the size of his body. He lives in his girlfriend Ran Mouri’s house but with a different identity. Only 2 people knows his realy identity, his neighbour scientist, who helps him, and a girl who eaten the same medicine and goes to his school. He helps police to find the villains. His dream is to get back to his normal size. He has succeeded by eating a medicine, but it only lasts for a period of time.

            In this episode, Conan was sick, but the girl who knew his identity, Vi Graythron told him that she invented a new kind of medicine that could change Conan’s body back to normal size immediately. Conan was impatient and ate it when he had a bad fever. He turned back to his normal size, but dreamed about 10 years later. In his dream, his body changed but everything else too. He dreamed about 10 years later. His friends were at his age, and his girlfriend, who waited for him for 10 years, decided to get married. He finally woke up to reality. He was shocked, but also relieves knowing it was only a dream. It was the first time that he was glad about being small.

            This episode was on my favorite list was because it was the one where he understood the good in being small. It also showed his strong will of changing back to his normal size. In most of the episodes, he had strong will of changing back to his normal size, but this one was one of the episodes that showed his will the best. He was very glad when he thought that he turned back to his normal form. After finding out that it was only a dream, he felt relieve, disappointed and sad. He felt relieve because what he thought that happened did not happen. He felt disappointed because he still wanted to be in his normal size even though it was a dream. He also felt sad because he knew that Ran was about to be married and he would lose her. Even with his wisdom, he could not solve the problem of changing back to his normal size. I felt bad for him, for not turning back to his normal size, and for not getting Ran back.

            Conan was brave, strong and selfless detective. He rather suffers himself to save the others. It was what he does, saving people and helping the police. He was a big hero when facing crimes, but he was helpless when it came to family issues. Just like a lot of young people, they were not good with family issues. In the face of relationship, he was lucky to have a faithful girlfriend who rather waited until he came back instead of getting a new boyfriend. His father and mother were loving parents too. It was just that they left him when he was at the age of a teenager.

            I think that Conan experienced a lot in one life time and he should deserve something that he wants. For a teenager, grade 10 student, he has been through what seems impossible for another to see. He has seen deaths, explosives, rubbers, kidnaps, fire and many other traumatic events. He is a very strong person, unlike a lot of the other people, who may be suffering from PTSD. Sometimes I wish that I can be as strong as Conan, but it seems impossible. I am afraid of spiders and other non-human weird, bloody, reckless, powerful creatures such as zombies and monsters that live in the dark. Sometimes, I love the darkness, but sometimes I can be afraid because of dark. Conan is never afraid of darkness. He explores an entire building that is empty and dark without anyone’s help. He finds clues in the darkest places. I cannot do that by myself, because it is too creepy and scary.

            Anyways, Conan is just a fiction character, which is what is making him so perfect. In reality, no one can be that perfect. Not afraid of dark, not afraid of deaths. It is almost impossible. This episode is doing a great job at describing Conan’s feeling of being a teenager again. I think that he should become a teenager at the end of the whole series.
